Shawn blogs about trip out West
Before jumping on his plane home, Shawn Lee kindly posted the following about his recent trip to the West Coast…

LA was nutso! Is that a real word? Ha ha!!! I put together an LA-based-band with the help of man-about-town Todd Simon. Thanks Mr. T. Had Pete McNeal & Aaron Redfield on drums. Mark Cross on keys. Patrick Bailey on guitar. Tracy Wannomae on horns and Chris Lovejoy & Davy Chegwidden on percussion. We were also joined by my friend singer songwriter “am” on acoustic guitar for some shows. The band was amazing and we had some great jams and lot’s of laughs.
I saw lot’s of old friends in LA and met lot’s of cool people. I found myself in a true LA moment hanging out with David Sylvian and Andre Cymone talking about music and kids. I also met MeShell NdegeOcello, John Black, Dan Ubick and saw my old friend Keefus at Sunset Junction. Orgone played a tight set and it was great to see my homie Fanny Franklin for a hot minute. Saw my good friend artist Jim Mahfood at a few shows (he did both SL/Clutchy sleeves.) Both Bei Bei and Ohmega Watts came down to the Fullerton show as well as Michael Mc, Thomas, Enrique and scotty coats from Ubiquity. Good times. Finally played on KCRWs Morning Becomes Eclectic! Great to see Jason Bentley again(it had been 16 years)! You can watch the show on KCRW.com (see link in the post below). Amoeba records was fun - also recorded and filmed, link to post soon. You can see Kiss the Sky on YouTube live from amoeba already. Bumbershoot was great and I caught a few numbers from the Budos Band, they were smokin! Also saw Pete Molinari from London to complete the small world scenario. The grand star gig was crazy and played some Chinatown ping pong under the Chinese lanterns. I had a great going away house party in Hollywood complete with a mariachi band! Bei Bei came and we played 4 songs from the album! I also did a off the cuff version of Kiss the Sky with Bei Bei and co., too - we jammed on with lot’s of old friends coming in and out of the mix. Money Mark dropped in and we had a great hang with drummer Pete McNeal until late. Also set in with am at Bardot in Hollywood and ran in to my old friend Fish too. I realized how closely connected or nearly connected I am to so many talented people here in LA. Never more than a person removed from almost anyone. Crazy! I’m going home to London tonight and can’t wait to see my wife and 2 girls. I’ve missed them all so much. I got two collab vocals recorded while I was in LA. One is with Nimol, the singer from band dengue fever, and the other from Bardo Martinez of Chicano Batman. Exciting stuff! I’m mixing 6 songs for Little Barrie’s album when I get back to my studio and finishing my World of Funk album too. LA and Seattle were great and thanks to everyone who made the shows and this experience such a memorable one. Good times much love.

Shawn Lee live on KCRW

In case you’ve not been able to see Shawn play live in L.A. over this past 2 weeks, or at the Bumbershoot festival this weekend (along with the amazing Georgia Anne Muldrow), check out a rare live performance and interview with Jason Bentley at KCRW. Lee’s Buddy AM joined in for a guest appearance. Rumors of a future collab are afloat…
